Pension Credit: What you need to know

On 21st August, the Government published information on how to claim for Pension Credit. Pension Credit offers support worth on average over £3,900 per year and it is thought that up to 880,000 households could be missing out.

Pensioners should check if they could be eligible for Pension Credit to secure the Winter Fuel Payment worth up to £300 per household.

You can apply for Pension Credit if you’re of State Pension age and on a low income. You must live in England, Scotland and Wales to qualify. Pension Credit is separate from your state pension and a private pension or owning a home are not necessarily barriers to receiving it.

When you apply for Pension Credit your income is calculated (if you have a partner, your income is calculated jointly). If your income is higher, you may still be eligible for Pension Credit if you have a disability, care for someone or have housing costs.

Pensioners need to apply by 21st December 2024 to receive the Winter Fuel Payment, but can apply at any time provided they meet the eligibility criteria.
