Support for Students

Starting University is an exciting new adventure for students where they can learn, meet new people and experience new things. However, being away from home with the current cost of living, money might be a concern. There are different funding options that can help to ease the pressure.

Student Loans

Most undergraduate students can apply for a student loan from the government. You’ll only repay your student loan when your income is over the threshold amount for your repayment plan, unless you’ve been overpaid. The threshold amounts change on 6th April every year.

Your income is the amount you earn (including things like bonuses and overtime) before tax and other deductions.

Student grants, bursaries and scholarships

Grants and bursaries are usually awarded without an expectation that they will be paid back. Some are tied to specific courses such as teaching, others are available if you meet specific criteria such as being a care leaver or being from a low-income household.

Student scholarships are usually awarded to people who perform exceptionally in education, sporting or creative pursuits, the scholarships can come direct from the university or from other organisations.

Visit Save the Student to find out more information about the above types of funding.

Apprenticeships and Sponsorship

Another route to reduced or free education is through employer sponsored courses, or apprenticeships.  This usually means you will complete your degree alongside working. This may extend the length of time it takes to complete your degree.

If you are already in work, speak to your employer about any opportunities to learn whilst your work, you can also get more information from UCAS on apprenticeships.

Don’t forget that once you are on campus you can also take advantage of numerous student discounts. You can join the NUS and apply for a TOTUM discount card to  save big on shopping, eating and drinking.
